Here's a fun little ladle. Presumably Peruvian work, with a cast terminal soldered onto the handle, which in turn is soldered onto the bowl. (yes, it really is soldered onto the bowl, one can see the different color of the silver solder there, as in the handle joint) The casting is the crudest element; the workmanship overall is pretty good. Length is 4.4 inches.

Why do I say it's fun? It has no marks, but the number 925 has been incorporated into the design of the handle! I've never seen another piece where that was done -- have you?

FWG, since the mark experts have not replied, here goes. Your laddles clever solution to marking is a first for me (30+ yrs). If you had not pointed it out I might have missed it. I wonder if the smith did not own a 925 punch, is there a makers mark?

My guess as to why no one has shown intrest is that it is provincial in feel and not in the main stream. For silver to be collectable there either has to be lots of it or very little but generaly it must be at the top of the heap in design or technique.

Thanks for showing us this, I like the idea and will put it in the things to do pile for the future.

Thanks, agleopar! I have a taste for the unusual, and I didn't notice the 925 in this myself at first glance. Made me wonder how many times I've missed such....

There are no other markings on it whatsoever, so I suspect that you're right and the person had no punches. But wasn't s/he creative? And of course one could read the design as the entrance to a mine, in the mountains, with a person -- and silver -- coming out. Hearkens back to the pre-Columbian traditions....
