Hi all

On a recent visit to an antiques store in the Blue Mountains (NSW, Australia), I came across a number of odd little spoons. They featured marks that I was not familiar with. On a hunch, I bought one for further study.

Comments:

  1. Appears to be a person waving on top of a monkey (?!)

  2. About 7 cm long

  3. Quality is not great

  4. Marks as follows: on the left, ?B (maybe KB?). Middle - a flower or bird looking object. Right - an animal looking right? Above that is a couple of bumps, which look like part of the "flower" shaped Austrian purity mark (that flower shape)

  5. Would certainly appear to be silver, despite the lack of a purity indicator
I have (hopefully) attached some photos

Does anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks in advance

Waylander

Spoons from the early to mid 1700's had the same type of back. At least some in the US did.

Unfortunately your spoon is not from the 1700s, but a Dutch production of the late 19th, early 20th century, - as far as I can see the eagle mark on your spoon is pictured as No. 464 in K.A.Citroen:Valse Zilvermerken in Nederland, B.V.Noord-Hollandsche Uitgeversmaatschappoj, Amsterdam, New York, Oxford, 1977 (Phony {apocryphical} silvermarks of the Netherlands) and I am sure you would find the other marks there too.

Thanks Venus / DB

I suspected that it was a replica, but that doesn't overrdide the fact that finding out such information is fun!
