I am a retired teacher who has a new passion antiques. I recently was gifted these beautiful sterling candelabras which convert to single candlesticks. These are marked with a number 12 and just the head of a unicorn. I found that 12 means it is early German silver (this came from a German immigrant family) but I can't find the maker that used just the head of a unicorn---unfortunately the marks are so small I can't photograph it. Please does anyone know who used just the head of a unicorn?

Hi -

12 Loth = 750/1000
in use in Germany before 1886, with the city mark and the silver content, 12L,13L etc.

After 1886, crescent moon and crown mark, minimum silver content 800, and maker´s mark

Here the only unicorn marks I know, but they are after 1886. Without photo of the mark it is very difficult, it could be a townmark, which looks like a unicorn. Or a mark of the years between....

Please try to photograph the markings as photos are much more useful than verbal descriptions. Use the macro setting on your digital camera (it is the setting with the little flower icon on most cameras) which will let you get your lens to within less than an inch of the marking. If this does not work, a trick that usually works is to get a magnifying glass and then take the photo through the magnifying glass.

Are there identical markings on both the bases and the 3 candle attachments?

I note in the photos that the 3 candle attachments do not seem to fit very well into the bases. Is this just the photo or are they a little off in the way they are made?
