Hello to all members at this forum.

My users name is silverhunter, I collect silver work from Norway since a short while. The photograph is in combination with my question, who can give me any information about the silver spoon.

The spoon is dated 1798 and there are three stamps on it. I hope that the photo is clear enough, the marks are : a crowned cross, the letter M and a mark with the letters LK in it.

I hope that I can get any information about this spoon. If there are questions from other members about Norway silver work I hope I can give any information from my site.

Greetings from silverhunter, success with the hobby!

Thanks for the photo, silverhunter; they always help immensely.

Your spoon is not Norwegian, but from Kaliningrad, the Russian exclave on the Baltic Sea wedged between Poland and Lithuania and better known (particularly in silver circles) by its former German name of Königsberg. The crowned cross is the city mark, taken from the civic arms. The "M" is the guild warden's mark, which changed annually and is, therefore, a true date letter; "M" is for 1798, so the inscribed date is contemporaneous.

The maker's mark is worn and actually reads "ILK" for Johann Leopold Käwerstein. He became a citizen on 18 March 1790, and almost certainly became a silver master around the same time. He was probably the son of Königsberg silversmith Carl Bartholomaeus Käwerstein (1698-1761), and is known to have married twice: in 1789 and 1805. He was still working in 1822.

Hope this helps!

Blakstone,

The first thing this morning was to check the post. Faster than lightning is your reaction. I've read your information a few times. Interesting and I've learned a lot from the knowledge from your side. So thank you a lot for your reaction and time to write the information. Your information will be placed near the spoon in the show window. One of my hobbies is archeology (only in the Netherlands) and a few weeks ago I found this spoon in the mud of a ditch, cleaned it and now its complete with information.

I'm very glad with your information!

Greetings from silverhunter.
