The Pre-revolutionary Russian Artels (cooperatives)as shown in Geoffrey Watts' book 'Russian Silversmiths' Hallmarks' are numbered from 1 to 29 with many gaps between. The missing numbers are - 3, 8, 10, 12, 13, 16, 17, 19, 21, 24, 26, and 27.

Can anyone please tell me if these missing numbers were ever owned by Artels or were the numbers chosen randomly by the Artels themselves?

The reason for the question is a piece of silver for sale apparently made by the 3rd Artel

I am a retired engineer with a love of silver. I have been interested in pre revolution Russian enameling on silver for some years and have slowly built up a modest collection of cloisonne work (mainly spoons) over the last 15 years.

I follow dealers on the web not only for the chance of buying occasionally, but also to glean information on Russian silver masters - their periods, styles, palettes etc. For the same reason I have purchased reference books - Postnikova-Loseva, Geoffrey Watts etc.

It is this 'thirst' for information that led to the question of Artels. It seems strange that there are missing numbers. Who allocated the numbers to the Moscow Artels, a guild? local Government?

The mention of an item for sale by the 3rd. Artel was not from a view of buying (asking price too high for me) just curiosity.

Hope this in some way meets your reference to guidelines.

Thanks for the introduction. And welcome again to the Silver Salon Forums.

I look forward to whether one of our members will be able to provide some insight. Sometimes it can take a little while for a response but hopefully we won't have too wait too long.

While we are waiting, please consider starting a new thread/post and share with us some of your collection and educate us all about cloisonnes work.

Thanks.
