Hello,

I am posting here to resolve a minor family disagreement. A relative's estate contains a set of Ricci Cellini flatware. This is a pattern made in both sterling and silver plate. This set is not marked sterling nor does it have any other hallmarks, e.g. 925 to indicate that it is indeed sterling.

My contention is that it is silver plate since it only has the manufacturer's name and Italy. Other family members disagree.

My question to members of the forum is how is Ricci sterling flatware hallmarked?

I am an avid collector of US Victorian flatware but not familiar at all with Italian sterling. I searched the forum but did not find any listing for Ricci.

Thank you for your assistance.

The company's website shows just a .925 Sterling advertizing page but no actual mark. The presentation is maddening for a silver scholar. It shows current production, new offerings and surprizingly it shows what is being discontinued. Beyond that, there is no information on how things are marked. Silverplated flatware is not listed as an offering.

Could you post pictures of the silverware?

Thank you Dale for your reply. I also visited their web site and was also frustrated. However, I did receive a direct reply from the Ricci VP of Operations who said that their sterling flatware, in addition to the company name and Italy, is marked .925 (the stainless version is marked 18/10). He also said that Ricci discontinued making silver plated flatware in the mid-1990's and he does not recall how it was marked. The flatware is not in my possession and I can not get a picture. It appears that the silver in question is plated flatware. Thanks for your help.

For whatever it is worth, I know that Buccellati silverplate is labeled simply "Buccellati Italy" whereas its silver is marked "Buccellati Italy" and "Sterling" or "925".

Ricci also made Cellini in 800 silver. Here are some photos of one of my pieces. Note that the marks are RC, 20AL and 800.

efuerst100,

Thank so much for your twp replies especially for an actual picture of the Ricci hallmark!

I am certain that the family set in question is the silver plate version which was discontinued about ten years ago.

I was not aware that it was made in 800/1000 as well.

Regards,

Sometimes the STERLING word is very, very small. Take one of the knives and use a magnifying glass to look around the ferrule. The ferrule is the transition between blade and handle. Good Luck and yes, please post a photo as that could help plus we all would like to see what you have.

Just saw the other replies. Even if it is plated it is still a nice looking pattern.
