Hi - I am in Southern California and relatively new to the forum. Primarily, I collect American sterling flatware, silver proof coins (American, Indian Nation, dragons and cats from anywhere)and all types silver pieces that have dragons on them. Yea, I know, eclectic. I am looking for a couple of good reference books about pseudo and Asian maker marks. Any suggestions? IP: Logged |

If by pseudo marks you mean American coin silver, the standard work is John McGrew's Manufacturers' Marks on American Coin SIlver. Otherwise I'm not sure just what that would refer to - lots of possibilities. I know of no good book on Asian marks, although there is a Frightfully Expensive book on Chinese Export that I don't have nor have seen. I have in my files a photocopy of the marks section of an older book on Chinese Export, which has been rather useful over the years, but unfortunately did not get a titlepage with it so I can't give the reference. Pienke Kal's Yogya Silver: Renewal of a Javanese Handicraft doesn't illustrate marks but does have a list of silversmiths initials and lots of good photos of pieces. It's a really nice little book. I'm afraid that's all that come to mind at the moment. You can also go through the silver library here - it's also linked at the bottom of every Forum page for easy reference. IP: Logged |

By pseudo marks I was referring to the 19th century Chinese marks on import pieces that looked like English marks on English pieces, but actually weren't. I thought those were refrred to as pseudo marks? IP: Logged |

Kalikiss, you're right in that those would be called "pseudomarks", but that term alone can also refer to early American marks that imitate English markings, as frequently found in New York or elsewhere in the northeastern U.S., or even stamps that imitate any of a number of European marks, as found on much silver produced in Hanau, Germany. Now that you've clarified things, maybe someone in the forum can point you to a reference specifically about Chinese export pseudomarks. IP: Logged |

This page on another site is reasonably comprehensive for Chinese export silver marks - and includes the two main published sources in its notes at the top. If you follow the links on the names on this page you'll see a number of pieces with dragons, too. There also are English-style marks on some Indian (South Asian, that is) silver. Again I know I've seen a short compilation, but cannot now remember where. IP: Logged |

Thanks. I know there is large book that has "pseudo marks" in its title, but I can't remember the name or author and no one else seems to know ::sigh:: Of course, your are right, it probably has all kinds of pseudo marks - those would also be helpful. IP: Logged |

FWG - thank you so very much. I am still searching for "the book" but this site is a real help until I can find "IT". IP: Logged |
