My friend bought this at the flea market this weekend. We are not sure what it is. It is about 5" long, made in Italy c. 1970s. The business end is a loop that starts to wrap back around the base of the stem and terminates in a fairly sharp pick. Any thoughts?

The sharp pointy ends makes me think its not my suggestion below ... maybe this will cause someone to have a better answer....

Perhaps a large button hook (or not).

To untangle your 1970's leather fringe vest?
Just kidding. Does the non-business end open up?

The non-business end does not open.
I think the pointy tip has some function, to grab something probably. It is unnecessarily sharp to be purely decorative.
A party in 1970s Italy sounds pretty good to me!
I guess this will remain a mystery for now.

I agree that there's probably some purpose. The sharp end could stab through a fold of cloth, and then you could twist it so that the cloth was looped into the loop part, and you would have a handle pull or raise the cloth with. But what kind of cloth and why? Skirt lifter? Or too modern for that?

I think hose_dk may be onto something although given the vintage of the piece, maybe something a little stronger than cigarette.
