Any ideas where this letter opener was made? Seems unlikely to be U.S.
I'm guessing she's a Yorkshire terrier. Decorative stones form the dog's tongue and blue eyes and she has little diamonds (?) on her bow and collar.

My gut reaction is that this is a high quality 20th C Chinese piece. I am pretty sure the mark is a Chinese deer with the legs folded up and the antlered head thrown back. The dog looks like a Pekingese, and the stones are Carnelian, popular in Chinese jewelry. I could be wrong, but Chinese for a western market is my best guess.

Thanks, Brent! Great thoughts! Where could I learn about the Chinese deer mark? I puzzled over the mark thinking it could be an animal but didn't visualize a deer with antlers until you mentioned it. The design and carnelians would indeed fit with a Chinese origin.

No problem! I know I have seen that deer pose before in Chinese art, but I just can't place it. Hope you can find out more!

the 006 250 marking, clearly hand-struck from individual numerical punches, leads me to believe this was marketed as a "limited edition" piece. suspect it is fairly recent (90s or later). perhaps some thorough googling for limited edition figural sterling letter openers will turn up a potential maker.

Thanks Paul! Yes, the hand-struck numbers suggest there are other items out there. I'll search along those lines.
