I recently purchased a claret jug made of glass with a gorgeous pattern consisting of flowers and leaf swirls, with a twisted bottom and applied handle. The spout is silver with the following hallmarks: The initials W.C in a sideways oval. Next is a full lion, facing left with raised paw. Next appears to be an empty shield. Next is the number 1. I have researched, but cannot find this hallmark, and was hoping someone could help. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

It appear that your item was made in 1906 in London, England. My schedule is such that I won't have the time to look up the "W. C" mark right now. Maybe someone else will be able to look it up. I should have some more time next week.

WC is the maker's mark of William Comyns & Sons, a very well-known and prolific English maker since the middle of the 19th century. They had quite a large factory and in fact were in business in England until fairly recently. You usually only see their mark on good quality items, and this claret jug looks beautiful!

My most sincere thanks to both of you for sharing your knowledge. This is a wonderful service and is most appreciated. I shall also recommend this site to my fellow dealers and customers who are silver lovers, as am I. I shall now attempt to find a book value on this piece...I am confident that it is worth more than the $10.00 I paid for it at a yard sale...LOL! Thanks again for your expertise. Vivian
