Hi All, Great forum. I was hoping someone could provide the names of some British firms working in 19th century India. I once had a list but can't locate it and the only one that I can remember is Hamilton & Co. in Calcutta. Thanks, tag

I am sure that you have found out by now.

Some of the most prolific:
Calcutta before 1860
Pittar & Co. (P&Co)
Charles, Nephew & Co. (CN&Co)
Arthur Pittar, Lattey & Co. (APL&Co)
Calcutta before 1820:
William Henry Twentyman (WHT)
John Hunt
Joseph Rondo
Hippolitus Poignand
Madras c.1800
Hugh Gordon
then
Robert Gordon
George Gordon
George Gordon & Co. (GG&Co)
and from 1848
P.Orr & Sons

The book with them all in is
"The Makers of Indian Colonial Silver"
by Wynyard Wilkinson - available thru this website!!

Hamilton & Co were known as the Garrard of India.
P.Orr & Sons still exists (often just marked ORR) in Madras.
