Dear Persons,

Recently I inquire a carving set. On the knife it is incrave - Levesley Brothers Sheffield, forward. The second piece is the fork, which has a hook by the front of the handle, then the stock and the bottom of the fork is stamp 8670. All detail work is done in silver. Set came in a wooden case with red velvet liner. could you please direct me in the direction I need to go to find the history on this?

Thank you,
Chad

According to a reference to "The Sheffield Bowie & Pocket Knife Makers 1825-1925" by Richard Washer, LEVESLEY BROTHERS were operating in Mary Street, Sheffield, England, circa 1879.
The company was still in operation in 1916.

If the knife handle and fork are sterling silver, I would expect to find a hallmark.

The crown indicates the Sheffield Assay Office, the lion that it is sterling silver, and the letter (depending on style), the exact year (in the photo 1905).

Without these marks, your carving set is probably silver plate.

The number 8670 might be the reference to the pattern, or possibly a design registration number. If so, it means the piece was first designed in 1884, although it may have been produced later.
