I have a question about date marks and their cartouches specifically from Birmingham. We picked up a cute little Birmingham spoon recently. It was made by John Cook and Sons. The date mark is a bit confusing though. The letter matches that for 1893, but the cartouche is off. The proper cartouche for 1893 according to Jacksons, etc. is an oval. But the cartouche on our spoon is a rectangle with squared off corners. The 1894 mark is in the rectangel with squared off corners. Could it be that the mark on this spoon is transitional between the official 1893 and 1894 marks?

There are three things to bear in mind when looking at the punch shape for any assay office mark or date letter
#1 Jackson does not include all the variants, and, dare one say, is still somewhat unreliable
#2 to avoid modern forgers getting too clever , the Assay offices themselves are not very keen to give details which could make the antique plate committess work more difficult .
#3 the number of actual punches involved, certainly from 1800 onwards, runs to several hundred. In particular there is a range of sizes , from minute punches for chain or watchcases to large free punches for major items.

Also although in theory the old punches for assay marks were destroyed when obsolete, this did not always happen, and human nature being what it is, an assayer in a hurry whose punch has been mislaid may grab anything !
