Recently this object appeared on an internet auction, with a mark ostensibly of Egyptian origin. There have been British Colonial marks from a variety of locations that have appeared on these forums, but none from Egypt. The following is the seller's description and an edited illustration reproduced with his permission:

Colonial Sterling Baby Rattle / Anglo-Egyptian ~ 1928

Interesting sterling baby rattle & whistle made in Egypt in the 1920's, this type of rattle is traditionally English in origin so this piece is Anglo-Egyptian, made during the British occupation and for the British market. It is adorned with engine turned engraving and six hanging bells to rattle. The ball end has a flat dent and the mouthpiece has teething marks, otherwise it is in very fine condition. Nice sized, it measures a full 4 5/8 inches in length and is handmade from heavy gauge silver. It is hallmarked on the rim of the mouthpiece with the Egyptian Cat hallmark and the date letter for 1928. Nice example of British Colonial silverwork.

According to a note from the seller, this date evidently derives from Tardy, which shows the cat mark along with an annual date letter "N" for 1938 ("D" would be 10 years earlier). Does anyone know of a published reference to the identification and dating of British "Colonial" silver from Egypt?
