One more thing.

I've been looking for a book titled "Discovering Hallmarks on English Silver" by John Bly. Can you tell me if this is a wise choice and if not, what is?

Thanks,
c

Hello ringboxlady,

Nice to see you return to the Silver Salon Forums. I can't really tell from your descriptions but you seem to be suggesting that your marks may be English? If so, maybe I should move this post to the English / Irish Silver Forum?
If they are English marks it will be very helpful if you post photos of the marks. The style of the cartouche and lettering is very important when researching English silver.

Thanks Scott that is just what I was looking for.

Here are my pics and also, can you suggest a book that would be helpful at identifying the makers!! Thanks for being so patient.

I look forward to hearing from someone soon.

Courtney

These marks appear to be 20th Century English; all Birmaingham except the last, which is London (the lions are passant, not rampant, which would be rearing up on the hind legs). The first is by H. Matthew, probably 1913, the second either 1920 or 1943, the fourth 1928. The date on the London mark is too blurred to read - if, as you say, it is an "O" it would probably be 1929. I do not have a source for more modern makers - someone else will have to contribute those. The "MADE IN ENGLAND" and "STIRLING SILVER" were probably applied for sale in the U.S.

Thank you swarter!!

I did a google search on 20th century silversmiths and ran across a website titled
thimble select. There I found two of my makers. The D&F is Deakin and Francis and the CS*FS is Saunders and Shepard. I did another google on Deakin and Francis and by my surprise are still in business with their primary stock of cuff links. I hope to hear from them soon.

I can't remember if I can post useful websites such as those at the forum? Let me know And I will gladly send the info.

Thanks again,
Courtney

Certainly you can, so long as the purpose is informational and not solely for commercial promotion.

Ringboxlady,

1.The HWPMCo hallmark belongs to HW Plate Manufacturing Co registered at the Birmingham Assay Office in January 1929. The letter D is the date letter for 1928-9.
Reference: The Silversmiths of Birmingham, ed KCJones.

2.The hallmark HP&S belongs to Henry Perkins & Sons. In 1897 Perkins was listed in London as meerschaum pipe and case makers. The company was still in business by 1923. The date letter O could be 1929-30.

Courtney,

The book about the Birmingham Silversmiths is probably not still in print but I feel sure it would be available in secondhand bookstores. Try a search through Google.

The full name of the book is:
The Silversmiths of Birmingham and their Marks: 1750-1980. The General Editor is Kenneth Crisp Jones and it was printed by N.A.G. Press Ltd, London in 1981.

The info about the other mark came from the following 2-vol work:
The Directory of Gold & Silversmiths Jewellers & Allied Traders 1838-1914, ed John Culme, printed in 1987 by the Antique Collectors' Club Ltd, Church Street, Woodbridge, Suffolk IP12 IDS, England. I would imagine this 2-vol work is still available.

Best of Luck

Patrick
