Hello all,

Here is a nice old Irish ladle. It is rather worn, but I think it is still a beauty. There has been some debate among people who have seen it as to whether the chasing on the handle is original or a later Victorian embellishment. My feeling is that the decoration is of an appropriate rococo style for the mid to late 1700's and is indeed original. The marks are worn, but you can make out Hibernia and the maker's mark of WW in a serrated rectangle.

I will step aside and see what our Irish enthusiasts have to add:-), especially as to maker and dating.

Very nice piece! The nature of the design, particularly the "amoeba" shape with curving leaves, is a typical design pattern in Irish Rococo pieces. There are some good examples of similar design on larger pieces (i.e. teapot and creamer) in Ticher's Irish Rococo Silver.

The only thing that puzzles me a bit is that I would have expected the design to be a little more elaborate, and cover a bit more of the handle. I have a catalog from an exhibit of Irish silver from the San Antonio museum from a private Texas collector, and there is a very similar ladle with a more floral design down the length of the handle.

Don't know if this helps!
