Hi: I am trying to identify this fish serving set (or so I think it is!). From the little I know I thought there had to be a lion in the string of hallmarks. Both pieces in this set are stamped "Sterling" followed by the letter "D" in caps. The stamps are on the handles.

Then on the shaft of the knife and the fork there is a string of letters in very ornate script in this sequence: K (Or H), B, &, K (or H), Star (the star has 5 points). "ENG" is stamped on both pieces.

Here are the images:

This unfortunately is the best image of the hallmarks I could get:

I understand that this is either the King's or Queen's pattern. Can anyone confirm which it is?

Thanks in advance

My first thought is that the blade of the knife and lower part of the fork may be English silverplate, and that only the handles are sterling.

Even so, one would expect to find an English hallmark (three stamps) on the handles.

Is it possible that the lower parts were exported and used by an American manufacturer? I wonder about the D for Durgin, for example.

I think Patrick has it right. I have a similar piece; a fancy fish slice with a English plated blade and an American sterling handle, in this case Alvin's HAMILTON pattern. Solid silver fish slices being rather expensive, it would make sense economically to import English silverplate functional ends to mate with what amount to sterling knife handles.

There is a lot of new "made-up" flatware being sold these days with the same idea. Your set is old and original, but you can buy all sorts of things these days with plated or stainless blades mated to knife handles.
