Clive Taylor has forwarded the following:

Mark found on a pair of shoe buckles of almost certain British Isles origin, one makers mark per buckle.

Style, by London dating 1770 -1780, but I think these are provincial so probably later (c1780 - 1800).

No assay or other marks. As usual very hard to photograph hence the drawing.

Both marks show a fault in the punch of a bar intrusion from the bottom of the left side into the upright of the "R".

My guess is provincial Scottish, c1780 -1790 . Perhaps Alexander Robertson of Dumfries.

I'm not sure if this will be of any help, I have found a few silversmiths in my reference book with the initials 'AR'and the assay offices they used
  • AR - Peter Arno, Exeter assay office
  • AR - Alexander Richards, Dublin assay office
  • AR - Anne Robertson, Newcastle assay office

good luck in your search

The consensus of opinion from trade experts is "probably ALEXANDER ROLLO of Dundee"
