We recently found this unusual British 6 inch long serving spoon, and wondered if anyone could provide some insight into it.

It has a T shapped handle, a pierced, floral bowl (about 4.5 cm in width). It appears to be all original.

It has a James II silver 4d Maundy coin embedding in the bowl of the spoon.

The hallmarks are very faded - I can make out the lion with his paw in the air, the remains of what could be a crowned leopard's head (London?) and a date letter - fancy p (?)in an oddly-shaped cartouche. Maker's letters could be [c s] or [g s] in a cartouche.

Any ideas? Do you think this spoon is as it was originally designed and from the late 1700's or a later creation? What would have been the use or history on a piece like this? Why would a coin be embedded in the bowl? Thanks.

I think there is little doubt that this is an alteration, probably Victorian, from an earlier plain tablespoon. In this form, although large, it resembles a caddy spoon.

It looks like the original spoon was a Hanoveriean pattern tablespoon datemarked for London, 1770. Then, in the 19th century, this was cut down, decorated, and the coin added - perhaps to turn it into a more unusual-seeming item, perhaps just to create what the maker believed to be an attractive caddy spoon.
