Hi there,

I recently bought a nice fiddle pattern salt spoon. The only mark on it is "JM". I have a good book on Scottish provincial silver but there are no exact matches. I was hoping it was by John Mackie of Ellon but there is a dot between his initials. The only other JM's listed are for Dumfries and Dundee but both of these carry more marks. I'll probably never find out who its by, but its an interesting and presumably rare piece.

In my experience, it is not always necessary for Scottish provincial pieces to carry more than the maker's mark - many can appear alone although others by the same maker may carry a town mark, or even true hallmarks from Edinburgh or Glasgow. Style is sometimes a clue - can you post a picture of the spoon showing both the back and the front?

Hi there,

Here are the photos.
Ellon silver salt spoon

It has an additional mark and is stamped in a different place. It is also shorter than mine. There are JM's listed for Fochabers and Dumfries but all the examples listed have complete or more hallmarks.
