Does anyone know anything about this silversmith other than the details give in Margaret Gill “ Dictionary of Newcastle Goldsmiths” ?

I am particularly interested in the dispute over his registration to enter a mark. His application was made in by July 1761 but his first mark was not entered until August 1763,.

The Wardens of the Newcastle Goldsmith Company asked advice from the Goldsmith Company of London on the matter, or perhaps James Crawford had asked London for assistance , since a July 1761 letter from Goldsmiths Hall in London told Newcastle they had no right to refuse him silver assays . Since relations between London and the provincial guilds were not normally cordial, the later seems possible.

It would appear to have been a dispute over his right to work as a silversmith, and if Crawford “be reputed to be a Person of ill Fame”. As Crawford’s later career seemed blameless the latter seems rare unfair.
