I recently acquired these three spoons online. They all have the same hallmarks, though all are worn, so I have only provided a photo of the lest worn. I believe I have identified the year as London 1750-51, and the maker's mark as John Wirgman, but the year date letter looks a bit odd to me. Any thoughts would be most welcome.

You are correct about the date - the mark looks odd because it is skewed a bit in its alignment with the stem, so the notch on the bottom, which is actually to one side of center, looks to be in the middle. The time is right for Wirgman, but the letters slant more than those in the illustration in Grimwade, so I will have to leave any confirmation to someone with more experience with that maker.

These spoons are early for the Old English style, and may have been "modernized" from Hanoverians - a not uncommon practice after 1760 or so, when the later style began to become popular.

A minor correction on the date, which is 1749-1750.

Jackson shows several examples of Wirgman's mark around this period and this certainly looks the most likely identification. However, Jackson also shows a very similar mark in which the J looks more like a script T and has more of a loop at the top left than Wirgman's mark; this mark looks to me more like the one on the spoon. It is dated at 1755-56, but Jackson is uncertain of the maker and lists him as "? Thomas Whipham".

Wirgman still seems the most likely candidate then.
