I recently purchased a plain fiddle pattern sugar tongs marked in London, 1877, with the maker "CB" in in a bifid frame (conjoined circles outline). Can anyone identify this maker? Thank you.

Also, I have a tongs marked in Sheffield, 1954, with a "RD No 857638" (the D and o are small and underlined). I assume this indicates a registered pattern. Is there a web source for identifying this pattern?

I believe that "Rd no." is the British equivalent of the US "patent no.".

Probably Charles Boyton - Culme has many marks for this man and his firm(s) of manufacturing silversmiths. How about a photograph?

Will do, but I need to borrow my friend's camera again - my collection of 25 British sterling sugar tongs (1797 to 1954) cost little more than a moderately priced digital camera. wink

As to the "Rd No" - further investigation indicates it refers to a Registered Design under the "Registered Design Act of 1949" and provides 25 year protection (can be extended). Currently available records (on the web) start with 1997.

CB is definitely Charles Boyton, in this case the second of that name. There were 3 Charles Boytons (father, son, grandson) working from 1825 to 1904, when the company became Charles Boyton & Sons. The mark you describe was first registered in 1872 and used through until 1900 when Charles Boyton 2 died. A fourth Charles Boyton (great grandson of the original one) ran Boyton & Sons until it collapsed in 1933, when he set up on his own with his own "CB" mark.

The registration number 857638 was issued in 1949. I have found the following site very useful for dating registration numbers. In addition it also explains the diamond-shaped registration marks used from 1842 to 1883.

Thanks, PhilO, that site may prove useful to many. It does seem to make an error when suggesting a design may have been used on an object BEFORE being registered - the 'rules' for registration apparently forbid it.

BTW, I also enjoyed the Charles Boyton thumbnail history.
