I am trying to identify a glass decanter with silver lid. Markings are J.G.&S. followed by a womens proile, sterling lion, anchor on it's side and what appears to be an O or Q but the sides are straight not rounded. My Grandmother left me many different decanters,She spent many years in England and I am trying to determine which pieces she bought there and which pieces are family (US). Thanks for any info anyone might have.

Sounds like a Birmingham assayed piece, with a Victoria Head duty mark making it probably 1888/89, although the anchor on its SIDE seems a bit strange. This being the case, the maker is probably J. GOFFE & Son. Their December 1882 mark is in a long punch with rounded ends and two indents to each long sides, between the "J" and the "G", and between the "&" and the "S"

I am a little confused as my little Bradbury's book of hallmarks quotes that "from 1999, the anchor is on its side for all metals". However, your piece seems to be much older than that ?!?

Another odd thing is the order of the marks, which seems wrong. Could these be pseudo marks on what is really silverplate?

The Birmingham anchor was almost invariably on its side for the cycle 1875-1899 - and also for the latter part of the previous cycle.

Wow! I always have the weird stuff! Thanks to everyone who replied so fast! I am going to attempt to post a photo of the marks.Something ??? about this? It is a small glass decanter about 5" tall the silver decorative cap (which has the markings) screws onto a silver neck which has a glass stopper? This may be a clue??? And to think this is only one of 12 different pieces I would like to identify all with different markings!! Thanks everybody!

Not being familiar with post 1830 Birmingham I would like to thank Phil0 for what is a very valuable piece of information concering the alignment of the anchor . Another note had been added to my long suffering copy of Jackson !
