Dad bought this in England in ww2. It was old at that time. 6 piece set. Silver handles with several marks.
    CROWN, PASSANTE
    b (FANCY)-"A&D"-CATALOGUE
    Rb145584;Rb142014
    ON KNIFE BLADE'W H BAKER:32 HATTON GARDEN'

I've looked everywhere and can't figure out any of these marks.

Please help me. I'm stuck.

Thanks in advance.

The marks you describe are consistent with marks used on sterling silver manufactured in Sheffield, England, 1894, by Allen & Darwin, Portland Works, Arundel Street. The "Rb" you read is probably "Rd", indicating the design registry number. Both the numbers you list were registered in 1890, consistent with the 1894 lowercase "b" hallmark (though 1919 is also a possibility). Allen & Darwin made many fancy serving sets; W. H. Baker was probably the cutler (knife blade maker).

I stress that this is only a guess based on your description of the marks. If you could post a photograph of them, I'm sure I or someone else could identify them for you with more certainty.

Thank you--big time.

I've been looking for this quite awhile. could you give me a source book for an amateur like me so that I could find this on my own. If not it's o.k. You've been great.

Thanks again
