I recently found a very "art-deco" looking silver cig. case in London. 4 hallmarks inside (on left) 2 connected diamonds with "F" in each one, what looks like an anchor inside a square, a walking lion (facing left- also inside a box)and a capital letter K inside a square. On the other part of the case by the band, is another lion and another letter "K". Any clues about this one?! thanks

Hi,

Without a photograph, I cannot be decisive. However, your cigarette case is likely to have been made in Bermingham, England (the anchor) and, if really art deco, 1934-35 (the "K"). However, "K" is also the mark for 1909-10, for 1959-60 and for 1984. Without a photo it's impossible to tell. Assuming it is art deco, the shield surrounding the "K" should be straight at the sides, squared at the top (i.e. 3 sided) and, most distinctively, have a horizontal "{" type-shape at the bottom of the shield. The Anchor and Lion (passant) should also have the same "{" at the bottom of the shields. If the foregoing fits, it's likely to be Bermingham 1934-35; if not send a photo. As to the two F's in diamond shapes, this is the Maker's Mark and I regret that I cannot identify the maker of this piece.

Hope this helps,

TBC

This maker's mark appears between about 1920 and 1960 so 1934 and 1959 are both possible. FF does not appear in the standard reference work for Birmingham silver, Silversmiths of Birmingham and Their Marks, 1750-1980, by Judith Bannister.
