Can anyone tell me whether Hallmarks are shown in a particular order. I have a silver comb with an Anchor, Lion rampant and letter U. I understood from some research that the lion came before the Anchor.
The owner, my aunt Nellie, of the comb lived between 1892 and 1944 and her name is inscribed on the comb.
The only possible dates I can find for U are 1869/70 and 1944/45. She wasn't born at the first date and died in the year of the second date.
Th makers mark has been well polished but looks like C s & ? S.
ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED
I shoould add that most of the teeth are missing from the comb so it is pure;y for family history and sentimental reasons that I am seeking yourr expert help/
Thank You

Hi.

A picture would enable us establish the date for the letter.

Hi Kinverroy,

Thanks for the picture. I'm certain that the year of hallmark is 1919-20, by virtue of the shape of the shields. Might this have been a 21st Birthday present for your relative?

I'm afraid, I cannot help with the maker's mark.

Hope this is of some help to you.

Kind regards,

TBC

Hi, kinverroy. It's especially important when looking at English marks to pay particular attention to the exact form or "font" of the date letter, as well as the shapes in which the stamped marks lie. Therefore, the marks you show cannot be for 1869-70, for the "U" of that year is in an oval shape. Also note that the anchor which corresponds to that year is in a shape more resembling a rectangle with beveled corners. This also cannot be the "U" for 1944-45. It most closely resembles the date letter "U" for 1919-20. The anchor for that year is similar to the one you show as well.

Jackson shows that the London silversmiths Cornelius Desormeaux Saunders & James Francis Hollings Shepherd (wow, what names...) were active at around this time (late 19th and early 20th C.) I think the mark you show is theirs: CS (star) FS

I find that if I can't find a maker's mark in the town for which I'm searching, it doesn't hurt to look for the mark in other towns in the same time frame.

Thank you all so much for the information re dates and maker. Not sure what the occasion could have been, Nellie being 26/27 years old. May have been a gift at the end of the Great War - will probably never know.
Thanks once more.

I can confirm Saunders and Shepherd - they had pieces assayed in London, Birmingham and Chester. Only yesterday I was checking a dish by them assayed Chester 1911!

No one answered your question about marks order. No, the lion does not have to come first.
