Hello-I'm hoping that someone can help me with identifying the maker of this little spoon, just 3 5/8" long and 1 1/4"+ wide. I think it's safe to say that it is English but not from London, and probably from 1804-05. But there I have to stop. I'll appreciate any more information!

Thanks in advance . . .

P.S.--I've just read a thread in the General Forum with very interesting information from Silver Lyon on "Misinformation," one point of which was that on small London pieces the leopard was omitted. So maybe this spoon is from London?

Despite the lack of crowned leopard's head, this spoon is almost certainly London; and because the shape of the duty mark changed during 1804 we can also date it as before 10th October 1804. The maker is possibly John Shea.

Thank you very much, Phil. How on earth did you know that the sovereign's head changed on October 10, 1804??!? I am impressed. I've just been scouring Google for a history of duty taxes, to no avail. Would you recommend a reference book that includes this information? Thanks again . . .

My bible for this sort of information is Jackson's Hallmarks. There is a very comprehensive (and expensive) hardback called Jackson's Silver & Gold Marks of England, Scotland & Ireland, but even the paperback Pocket Edition contains the details of the transition date.
