Here is another English ladle I inherited from my grandmother. I need help in identifying the marks. I have one of those Bradbury books but it doesn't help me.

Hello and welcome to the forum. Some of your marks are partially effaced, and the picture is a bit unclear. The piece is definitely London as indicated by the leopard's head. The partially effaced human head is that of a Soverign, in use from 1784-5 to 1889-90. Judging by the shape of the punch and the lack of a crown on the lion's head plus what looks like the date letter "n", I would say the piece dates to 1828-9. I don't have a good source on makers, and I am having trouble making out the letters. Looks like an "A" stamped over "CE"? Can you magnify the image any? Ditto for the date letter.

Hope this helps,
Tom

The maker's mark is just "CE" - for Charles Eley. The date letter could be either "m" (1827/28) or "n" (1828/29).

I fiddled the image a bit and it appears to be an "n"

Wow, that is great. I couldn't find any info on Charles Eley. Where do you get such information? I need a good book on Makers. Can anyone recommend a good one that isn't too expensive? I will posting today a fork which looks pretty old too.

It all depends upon what you want to know!

The 'pattern' or design name for your ladle is"Fiddle, Thread and Husk" - it is always really good quality and quite scarce (should you seek more!).

Charles Eley was trained as a spoonmaker by his father, William, who was also a spoonmaker trained by a spoonmaker (William Fearn). After trying partnership with his two brothers William and Henry the partnership broke up and Henry went off to be a Priest. Charles continued as a spoonmaker from 1825...

The address of their manufactory was:
I Lovell's Court, Paternoster Row, London.

Hope this helps! smile

That story sounds very interesting. I will have to get a book on it. Thanks.

John Fallon's little book on London marks and maker's (I forget the title!) should do you nicely, I think.

Wyler's, Book of Old Silver, is inexpensive but from what I undertand has a fair number of mistakes. It is still useful though. Jackson's hallmarks costs a fortune, but some libraries have it in their reference collection.
