I bought this set at a flea market on the weekend and just wanted to share them with you.

The design is of grapevines, leaves and grapes, and above that stands a Greek pediment and the Eternal Flame. This is not what we would call Olympic emblems today. The decoration was further embellished with gold wash or gilding and bluing added to the flame. The pediment has a tiny rose, to symbolize England. How curious and unusual.

The makers James Deakin and Son show hallmarks for Sheffield 1908 on the sugar tongs and 1914 on the spoons. The Fourth Olympiad was held at London in 1908.

Where Olympic Cased Sets common back then? If so I have never noticed them,(thirty years at collecting and dealing for over twenty) or might these be considered rare? Any explanation as to why the differing dates? Any further information would be gratefully received also.

Thank you.

P.S.I thought that someone might like to record this set for the record or such. I will gladly provide more photos or information.
