I recently bought a small (5") teaspoon with omly 2 hallmarks on the lower stem. they are
  1. the lion passant and
  2. I or J T in script
A knowledgeable dealer in my area opined that the spoon was made circa 1760, but he couldn't tell me why both the town of assay and the letter year mark are missing. The silversmith may be John Harvey, who entered his mark in 1750.

Can anyone please answer this query?

Thank you very much indeed.

It would be most helpful if you could post photos both of the spoon and the marks. Without them, it is not possible to give an accurate answer.

Dear swarter,

Unfortunately, posting photos is problematic for me now.

The two marks were struck upside down from each other, and the maker's mark looks like the script I or J T, like that of John Harvey as shown in Jackson's Guide.

I realize that not being able to see the marks or spoon certainly adds difficulty to specifics, but perhaps you could inform me in general how and why only 2 marks were struck?

In any case, I thank you for your reply.

As a new member I think I have to comment here on a question that Mark77 posed under "British/Irish Sterling". In the mid 18th century small items such as teaspoons were marked simply with the lion passant and the maker's mark. Script JT cannot be for Harvey - it would need to be JH.

I should have added that if the right hand edge of the punch is worn or overlaps the stem and the suggestion is that what looks like a T is actually half a script H, it really would need a photo to be able to comment.

Many thanks for your reply, agphile.

Now I know that many small articles, like my 5" teaspoon were often marked with just the maker's mark and the lion passant in that time period.

I made a mistake in my second correspondence, the initials in script are indeed JH, so the maker may be John Harvey.

Thanks again to all.
