This salver, 14 1/2 inches diameter, was given to Newark in 1923 by Louis Bamberger. It bears marks that we have always attributed to Richard Rugg, with a 1765 date letter. The openwork rim is applied to the flat body of the salver and (unseen in the photo) is has openwork rococo feet. I just wondered what people know about Rugg and his work. Our English silver collection is varied but largely middling, and almost all acquired before 1960.

Rugg was a specialist salver maker. Other examples of his work now in the USA are at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute (and probably in other collections for which I do not have the catalogues). I am no expert but he seems to me to have produced perfectly competent work in the prevailing fashions.

His mark used to be confused with that of Richard Rew, also a salver maker, but Rew's mark, thugh similar, is larger. And I'm afraid that is about all I can offer off the top of my head.
