[26-0941]

I have just bought a nice marrow spoon and there are a couple of issues of interest that arise. I'll try and post a picture of it tomorrow.

Firstly the date:
Looking at my Pocket Jacksons, it seems impossible to differentiate the London hallmarks for 1789-90 in cycle XVI from those for 1809-10 in cycle XVII. The latter is an upper case series, but the letter "o" in both appears to look the same. According to jacksons the other marks in the two cycles appear identical. Has anyone else noticed a problem differentiating these two date marks?

Secondly, the makers mark:
Unlike my other pieces, this one displays no makers initials. It does however show a broad arrow stamp - in the same style as a pussers arrow that would have been stamped on prperty of the Royal Navy. Does the mark suggest the spoon was connected to the Navy, or is it a makers symbol? (whose?)

I'd be really grateful for any suggestions on all this.

Thanks!

A photo would be very helpful. From one Georgian silver fan to another, welcome to the Forum.

That one is pretty easy with flatware, as they had different arrangements on the hallmarks between those years. 1789-90 will read left to right, and 1809-10 will read top to bottom with the exception of the Lion Passant. As for the arrow, it sounds like a journey man's mark. The maker's mark is probably worn off as sometimes they weren't struck very deep. Do post a picture, I'd like to see it.

A clear photo is needed, but if it is a military broad arrow marking you should know that this marking does not necessarily indicate that it belonged to the Navy, the broad arrow was also equally used by the Army to mark everything purchased for them, or it could have been marked on pretty much any kind of non-military British government property. You would need a supplementary marking like an engraving of a military unit or government office to tell much more.

It's taken me a little longer than I'd hoped, due to my forgetting where I'd stashed my digital camera (DOH!) but here are the pictures of my marrow spoon.

As Asheland has correctly surmised, the arrow is not a military mark, but a tally mark, used by a workman in another's shop to mark his work, and the date would be 1809-10 from the orientation of the marks. There is no substitute for a good photograph.
