I have had a set of four silver spoons with gold wash bowls, in their original box marked W. Alexander & Son, Glasgow for many years. I would like some information about theses spoons.

The Mark appears to be R(CorD?) 200157.

The spoons have a scallop-shell bowl (swirls left). The handle has an S shape and ends in a (possibly chased) pattern of leaves, small flowers and a flag or banner shape (possibly meant for engraving).

I can send a digital image, if you accept them.

They were a wedding gift to a friend who gave them to me when she divorced in 1970. Possibly purchased in Glasgow or somewhere in Great Britain in the 50's.

Can anyone tell me about these spoons?

Is there a marking somewhere on them of a thistle in a shield shape? That would indicate they are sterling.

I, too, have one of these spoons - and my example is certainly silverplate, some of which has worn off on the back of the bowl to reveal a brass-like pale vellow metal.

Your box points to a British origin - although Alexander of Glasgow may have been the retailer rather than the manufacturer. I have no information, sorry.

The Rd 200157 is presumably a British design registration. These numbers replaced a complicated diamond symbol in 1884. 200157 corresponds to the second half of 1892, although this is only registration and the pieces may have been made for several years afterwards.

It is possible to trace the original registration at the British Library, London.
