Hello!

Can anyone help clear my confusion?

  • Is the lion passant ALWAYS on solid sterling silver?
    Is it ever on silverplate?
  • And does the crown mark always mean Sheffield?
  • I was given a tray and told it's silver over copper, but it has the lion!

Thanks for any help.

Welcome to the forum. We will need to see a photograph (preferably) or a drawing of the marks in order to definitively tell you what you have.

Patty,

As you are not asking a specific question about your tray I think I can give you some answers in the absence of pictures.

  • Is the lion passant ALWAYS on solid sterling silver? No; it should, however, always be on English sterling silver. Other countries (including Scotland and Ireland) have their own conventions.

  • Is it ever on silverplate? Yes, frequently.

  • Does the crown mark always mean Sheffield? No, not only is it is often used by manufacturers as part of their own trademark, but it may also form part of the silver marking scheme in other countries.

Note that British silver assay marks are always formed by punches and never by engraving or moulding. This simple observation will eliminate most silver plate items purporting to be British sterling.

Phil
