![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Above is a seal top spoon attributed to Richard Hilliard of Exeter, England. Mr. Hilliard was born circa 1520 and died September 12, 1594. He was the son of a Cornish goldsmith and the father of Nicholas, a noted painter of miniatures. At the time this spoon was made Exeter did not have an assayer (that did not occur until 1701) and the maker's mark was affixed to the bowl rather than the purity mark. Some of the goldsmiths in Exeter did use the Roman numeral X as a townmark but apparently Mr. Hilliard did not. Date letters were not used at this time. The top of the finial is pin pricked with the letters EB over EH. It also has a number starting with 16 and what may be 14. This is the only part of the spoon that still has remnants of the gilding. One of the photos shows a similar spoon by Hilliard that is in the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter. Their spoon still has most of the gilding. I just noticed this spoon after rereading some of Agphile’s interesting posts and could not resist. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Ah the EB and EH in the pricking is like a Rorschach test. Thanks for pointing that out. Great piece. Thanks for sharing. IP: Logged |
