Discolored splotching 3 viewsI’m a casual, amateur collector of vintage silver. I’ve done mild cleaning and polishing of old silver I find secondhand. In just a couple of instances, I’ve had some odd splotches of slight discoloration become visible once I’ve cleaned an item. I’m attaching a closeup photo of one example, from a nice quality silver-plated Oneida Revere bowl that is several decades old and likely wasn’t polished for years based on the thick layer of tarnish it had. I know an initial thought might be that the plating has simply worn off, but this doesn’t appear to be the case, especially because the item is plated on brass and this doesn’t have a yellow tone. Also, the splotches don’t feel like remnants of a lacquer, and I’ve tried a bit of pure acetone to see if that clears it up. It does not and caused no change at all. I’m wondering if anyone knows what might be going on? Thank you!Apr 20, 2019
