This is often found stamped on goods (fancy servers, souvenir spoons, etc) produced by The Robbins Company and I was asked just what sort of metal it might indicate. It was suggested by a souvenir spoon specialist that it was something akin to 800 silver. I think it more likely one of those nebulous terms like Nevada or Alaska silver, though I am told the pieces don't have the same sort of dullness or feel of normal nickle silver. Has anyone heard of this term or know what it really is?

I have not heard of Pearl Silver. There is a finish called Pearl Finish, maybe the maker is referring to the finish.

quote:
From The Guide to evaluating Gold & Silver Objects
Pearl (Dead) finish. A matte type of finish usually applied by rotating wire brushes (a process introduced in the American silverware industry about 1869 and very popular for the decades following). Also known as matte finish, dead finish, pearl finish, satin finish and stippled finish. A comparable and very similar finish produced by an acid technique was available earlier, but was expensive and seldom used.

I was once lucky enough to see and handle a Polhamus-designed, Shiebler-made Medallion flatware service for 18 (yep--eighteen!). And each place setting had something like 12 place pieces!! The owner said that the pieces had a "pearl finish," a term I hadn't heard before. The term is a good one, because each piece did look slightly "pearlized," not matte. A sort of fuzziness around the edges as they caught the light--like the pearlized finish on cars. I really can't describe it accurately, but if you held examples of both finishes in your hands, you could tell the difference.
