I don't think this topic has been used, but I'm wondering what the oldest pieces are that members have in their collections. Here's mine, a Swedish sweetmeat dish from the late 17c.

We have a few items tucked away that could be older but we haven't researched them. Off the top of my head for us it might be a c. 1735 Adrian Bancker coin silver spoon

My oldest piece is a Dublin spoon from 1774. Like Scott and June's, it is a wedding spoon with the last name initial at the top and the couple's initials below.

English silver from the 17th century and earlier is at a premium because so much of it was melted down to fund the armies of Charles I and the Parliament during the English Civil War.

The oldest silver I have has already been posted. The beaker is from Basel, Switzerland and the orange strainer most likely came from England. I understand that the beaker's serpent scale is also referred to as matting. By any name the texture feels good in one's hand and I wish that this form of decoration had been used by the American silversmiths of the early to mid 1800s.

Here is the thread about the Swiss beaker (German Beaker?)

This one is not marked, but from every indication it is of the same time period as that one pictured in Michael Clayton's book.

Here is the thread about the Orange strainer (Punch strainer)

Hi,

My oldest piece is an Irish silver salver of circa 1740.

Kind Regards,

Tom

FWIW, Vathek's small bowl looks as if it could well be intended for the drinking of a spirit drink such as brandy. And TBC's small dish appears to be a spoon tray (as used for teaspoons).

Yes, I believe that my small salver is a spoon tray. Recently purchased, it was described as:
"A rare Irish silver small tray. The similar examples I have found have called this a spoon tray rather than a snuffer tray. The tray is marked with a makers mark of 'GB' for George Beere ca. 1740 and has the proper Dublin marks for the period. The tray measures 7 3/4" X 3 5/8". The piece came from the sale of the Estate of Charles Tottenham, Marquis of Ely and was bought along with a few other pieces...The tray has a few old repairs but the wear is moderate and the decoration is still clear. The tray weighs 100g and it also has the old scratch weight engraved on the bottom, '3:3:1/2" The monogram is a standing lion."

From the same vendor I purchased an 1825 round silver tray of c 7.5 inches diameter; same crest.

Rgds,

Tom

I would guess the Thomas Allen - Trifid (UK)is the earliest I can confirm a date (1697) on but the John Edwards (US) spoon may be the same or very close (1692 - 1705).

I have a couple of other (foreign examples still researching) that may beat the date, but I cannot be sure at this time.

I have several Talers and Daalers (counter-stamped) from the 1500 - 1600's but I don't count them as do the others.

Your oldest piece of silver is the oldest you have - I think that everybody can participate. So let us see what you have.

I have different things and the oldest must be these 2 spoons anno 1716. They are made by Bendix Aagesen Lund born in Skåne approx 1667. Citienship September 2nd 1695 dead 1737.

Copenhagen guardein Conrad Ludolph

So now its time let us see what you have - year don't matter as long as it is your oldest. Fortunately we collect differently - that what makes it interesting.

I suspect my oldest piece might be the Dutch Hoof spoon posted at a much earlier date.

Not quite my oldest oldest silver spoon, but more interesting than commoner English trefids), also from an older post. It is by Joh. Jacob Fern, Nuremburg, w.1694-1737. It is all original and of two-piece construction, evidenced by a separation along one side of the rattail, where the solder is incomplete, and air bubbles along the solder joint on the other. The upper surface of the stem is flat and plain, without decoration, name, or initials. The portion of the photo with the enlarged master's mark has been lost somehow, but it is a heart enclosing the letters I*I over F.

I also have a base metal Roman style hoof spoon of uncertain age and origin, which appears once to have been buried for a long time and later dug up. Again from an older post.

My oldest piece of silver is probably just a spoon from the 1780s or 90s, but my oldest piece of gold is these c. 3rd C AD Roman earrings:
