I thought I posted about this before, but if so, I can't find the thread.

I have a set of six pretty little gilt (gilded? what's the difference?) demitasse spoons in their original 19th century box. They are marked G.A.B., with no other marks that I can find. The handles have a Renaissance-style face.

First of all, does anyone have any idea what they're made of? Slight scratches and tiny worn spots seem to be tarnishing like silver. Could they be silver under the gold? Silverplate under the gold? Something else?

And does anyone know where they might have been made? Or who GAB is?

Thanks, salmoned! So since there are no silver marks, can I assume it's silverplate? Was Sweden thorough about marking silver?

Hi Polly -

Sweden has very rigid hallmarking laws! If it is silver the marks would look like that:

Hello Polly,

Just an FYI. There is a thread on GAB on the forum from 2009.

Have handled a lot of GAB silver and pewter over the years - can't recall seeing their mark with pellets rather than periods (or just the letters); and can't recall ever seeing their production with just the "GAB", have always seen it with proper Swedish hallmarks, or indicator of material (Alpacca, NS, Tenn, etc.). Believe the oldest GAB mark I've encountered was late 1890s, fitting in with references to that mark being put in use around 1900 - might just be my perception, but I get a bit earlier feel from these.

Nice spoons, if mine, believe I'd be having my friendly metals buyer check them with his XRF spectrometer.....
