The sugar bucket is 3" tall and 3 3/4" across the top (not counting the rope handle); the creamer is a bit smaller. Here they are with candy corn for scale. I'm trying out my new rubbermaid-washtub-and-SAD-light photo setup--what do you think? The creamer spout is pretty subtle--just a little bend in the bucket. Kind of digging the washtub lightbox. I may have to go reshoot all the horrible photos I tried to take just using my apartment's natural light, which is way too chiaroscuro for silver photography. IP: Logged |

Playing around with my lightbox setup--here's the Gorham sugar bucket flanked by my previous set of bucket/barrel cream-and-sugar, I believe by Curtis, from a couple decades later: The Curtis barrel creamer is one of my most-used pieces. The objects' shape, the light box setup, the lighting positions and camera positions....etc, all have a bearing. So its a bit of trial & error. Generally out of camera view, on either side of the camera lens. IP: Logged |

Thanks for the kind words! Yes, TJ, DEFINITELY post photos of your silver!! You KNOW I'm not the only one longing to see them!!! I bought the Gorham bucket set (for melt value) along with another very nice 1860s Wendt cream and sugar set. They both have the same monogram, so I assume they belonged to the same person. In my mind I call her Kate. I'm considering selling the Wendt set, which is beautifully made but not as much to my taste, so I won't post photos of it. But I WILL post photos of another treasure that just arrived today, a figural pickle bowl by Whiting. Stand by... IP: Logged |

Aw, thank you! It's really simple. I bought a white Rubbermaid tub--the kind you use for washing dishes or stockings by hand. I place it on its side, so that the sun is shining through the plastic, not falling directly on the silver. If it's not daytime, I place a lamp so that ITS light is shining through the plastic. I need to experiment with more lamps and better placement, and it might work better with a larger plastic tub, but the tub is the secret. I'll take photos and make a real post about this soon. The first three images in this thread (with the fabric background) were not taken using the washtub, by the way. They used daylight, a table runner draped over my sofa, and lots of post-production tweaking. I had to wait for exactly the right moment when the sun was coming in the window but not falling directly on that part of the sofa, and there was some rearrangement of furniture involved, plus cursing.
