Hi folks...

I am starting to collect the really old coin silver (rather than sell it), and I could use a little help on this piece (purchased today). It is 4 1/2" long, has a midrib front and a shell decorated drop. The makers mark appears to be a "PS" with a spike looking thing separating the two letters. I would love to say Philip Syng, Jr., because he used shells on his drops, but the the cartouche on my piece does
not mach the ones in Belden (pg 401).

I have not found anyone else, who fits the dates of this piece c. 1740's or so,
and that includes all the "PS" marks in the big "Jackson " book as well.

Thanks for your input.

Respectfully,

Marc Cutcher

It is unlikely to be Philip Syng as this type of shell design (lacking the billet) is not the one typically used in Philadelphia; also the spoon is in all probability later - 1760-70+ - as indicated by the short, shallow ridge on the handle. The bowl looks to be somewhat distorted, but if it is egg-shaped rather than oval, that would also indicate a somewhat later date.

See the discussions in this thread and in this one of the earlier form of Hanoverian spoons.

Hi there,

Yes, the bowl is a little bent, but it a normal teaspoon shape.

Thanks for the help, but any idea who?

Respectfully,

Marc

A mark as you have shown is very frustrating. It is obviously a well conceived mark; but is not in any of the references materials that I have. The longer I study silver markings, the more I realize how much in not mentioned in my books.
