![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Can anyone recommend a good book for identifying early American silver (pre 1830) ? Also - is there such a thing as a guide to silver retailer marks ? IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The book "Marks of American Silversmiths in the Ineson-Bissell Collection" by Louise Conway Belden is a great book. This book has a very nice illustrated glossary of spoon terms and styles. Any book by Catherine B. Hollan is great. Among other books her Philadelphia Silversmiths and related Artisans to 1861 and her Virginia Silversmiths, Jewelers Clock and Watchmakers, 1607-1860 Their Lives and Marks are both classics. WEV's website is still down, but I assume it will come up again someday. The link is at the top of the page of this forum's "American Silver before Sterling." Patrica E Kane's "Colonial Massachusetts Silversmiths and Jewelers" is also great if that area of the country is of interest to you. This is a great time to buy silver books as the prices have really dropped in recent years. [This message has been edited by ahwt (edited 03-20-2018).] IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I have not seen that book, but if one in interested in Indian Trade silver I imagine it could be quite useful. Buying and collecting Indian Trade silver has been problematic because of all the fakes that have been produced. A good book of authentic marks would be a start in the right direction for this field. I have seen and continue to see silver objects asserted to be Indian Trade at flea markets by dealers that have far too many of these extremely rare items. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I was able to borrow "Marks of American Silversmiths in the Ineson-Bissell Collection" through inter-library loan... very nice book. Great quality pics and has some good information that I hadn't seen before. Thanks for recommending it. IP: Logged |
