E-mail received from Carol:

Hello . . . I found a two-piece footed oval electroplate trivet with open work designs that opens much as a dining room table does when the leaf is inserted. It is 11" by 14" when the two pieces are closed together.

The initials MBC with EP underneath are on the back with each initial inside a separate five sided box. I thought perhaps this might be a Meriden electroplate piece.

There are also the numbers 33 on each of the two halves of the piece and the number 00125 on the piece in one place.

In addition - there are a number of different symbols.

A shield with a crescent moon and star inside, another shield with the balanced scales inside and a circle with what looks like a flower stem half circled by wheat.

Also . . . a crown, a three pronged symbol and a star in line together.

Thank you in advance for any information you might give regarding the numerous symbols, numbers, initials and their meanings. I've enjoyed reading about the many companies that produced silver and silverplate and their many hallmarks.

The "M", "B", "C" over "E" and "P" each in its own five sided outline is definitely a mark of the Meriden Britannia Company. Similarly, the scales in a shield is a mark of the same company. What an amazing assortment of other marks you have found on this piece!

The "33" marks sound like factory numbers used to track the pieces through the factory.

The "00125" is a catalog number. Meriden, by 1893, used two zeroes as part of the catalog number to indicate a nickel silver base metal with white metal mounts.

The rest of the marks sound like pseudo-hallmarks, but I haven't seen these on Meriden pieces. Are they part of the design on the top, or are they stamped on the bottom?

Difficult to tell you more without photos.
