I have a hand mirror that is marked sterling with the British pound symbol and then 5400. Can anyone tell me what this means? It is quite lovely with a repousse flower basket and floral design on the back.

Sorry, I'm a little new at this. I generally collect and am most interested in antique/ vintage sterling jewelry. But I have this mirror with the pound and 5400 mark that I've never seen before. So I'm curious to know the meaning of it. I'm sorry I don't have a picture.
I figure you guys will know the answer. I've been reading the forum for a while but have never posted.

When you say it is marked sterling, do you mean it has the actual word 'sterling' stamped into it or do you mean it has sterling hallmarks?

Without seeing it any response will be largely guesswork, but the 5400 marking sounds like it is just a model/catalog number used by the factory that made it and by the retailers who sold them when they ordered stock from the factory.

The 'British pound' marking could be a number of makers and without seeing the marking there is no way to say which it might be. For example, it could be La Pierre Manufacturing, or Levitt and Gold, or Lenox, or some other maker.

It has the word "Sterling." The symbol is the exact representation of the British pound symbol. I wondered about the 5400 because in British coinage it has (or had at one time) something to do with the number of pennyweights in a pound sterling.

The mark is that of La Pierre Mfg Co of NYC/Newark. The 5400 is just the model number for your piece. It is probably from about 1900-1910. None of the marks has anything to do with British origins.

Such model numbers (5400 in this case) are typically made up by factories so they can refer to a particular product by number rather than by a long verbal description. It is easier and confusion avoiding for them to track their production and inventory and then take orders for 'product number 5400' rather than 'sterling hand mirror with pretty flower basket and floral repousee design on the back'. Typically, if you can find an old catalog of theirs you will see their products illustrated and then have the product number next to them so the retail stores where you go to buy such things can place quick and accurate orders to the factory for their customers.
