I purchased an oval serving bowl the other day but I'm not sure whether it is silverplate(probably) or possibly Sterling. It has a portion of a makers mark on the bottom edge of the piece: the top of a genie's lamp, with flame and the initials US in the top of the body of the lamp. When they went to stamp it they only hit the top of the mark. The lower part of the mark is in space somewhere but not on the piece. I am new to the forum and don't know of anyone close by with an interest in Sterling (Rexburg, Idaho: about 90 minutes SW of Yellowstone Park) but I have many Sterling Flatware pieces and have interest in the history of Sterling production: Maker's marks, Designers names, year of introduction of patterns, etc. If anyone has a clue as to the maker's mark and the probable composition of this piece, your help would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance for sharing your knowledge. Bob--Idaho

Welcome and thank you for your support.

Without a photo of the mark on your item its hard to say.

Your description of a genie's lamp brings to mind the mark of Roberts & Belk but there isn't a US on the lamp

Do a search for ROBERTS & BELK. They were an English company that used a mark like that. I think they did both sterling and plate. If your piece does not have the English sterling marks and the genie symbol is the same it is most likely plate.
I would love to see your silver. Try your hand at posting a picture. This first time it is hard, but thereafter it is very easy.

I tried that but it didn't work very well. I will do so again. Thanks for your response. Bob

Thanks for your response. I found that maker mark first but the lamp is different. I am trying to figure out how yo submit pictures because I have several that show the partial mark well. I will keep trying to figure out how that works. Thanks again. Bob
