Hello,

I had some trouble posting using the platforms photo mechanism. My file was too large and all I have to use is my phone. So I hope my link will work.

I recently received a number of silver plated pieces from my great aunt’s estate and I have been working on identifying them. I have four spoons in particular with almost no markings, except one very small stamp on the back of the handle near the bowl of the spoon.

Does anyone have any idea what that indicates?

It could also be a clover, which Gorham used in 1913, but it is just a single mark and it seems they used more than one mark. I'm stumped.

My name is Ryan and my interest in silver is rooted in receiving a small number of random flatware from my great aunt. It has been fun trying to figure out what it all is. There are a few mysteries I haven’t unraveled yet and I am hoping to add to what I have learned through the accumulated expertise on the forum here.

Thank you.

The item is silverplate.

There are many claims to who the maker was so you will find this pattern with various marks. Most often I've seen it marked by:

  • E. H H. Smith Silver Co.
  • Rockford Silver Plate Co.
  • Benedict Mfg. Co.
  • National Silverplate

The pattern most often is called York Rose or Rose.

The above ice cream spoon was by Gorham and was retailed by a St. Louis company.
An interesting thread about the P.W. Ellis &Co. notes their problem with Gorham and their mark. Often companies that made sterling products did not concern themselves with companies that made silverplate as I think they felt they were in two different markets. It could be that Ellis also made sterling products.
I think the little rosette on the back was just a design element.

Thanks so much for the info. As far as I can tell you are correct. You have set my mind at ease that what I have is all plated.

The pattern dates circa 1910.

Benedict had a bunch of maker's marks.
I am betting your close up is a variation of one the Benedict marks. Here are two examples:
